Vehicles plow into crowd at UK car club meet injuring 17

Cars were seen hurtling down the road at speed

Ch Insp Alicia Shaw said: "We weren't aware of this event taking place and we weren't aware of such large numbers attending the Stevenage area".

"There were several younger people in the crowd, but they weren't kids".

The meets appear to be a weekly event for auto enthusiasts, but footage from Thursday evening clearly shows the cars speeding just metres from gathered crowds. We don't know when there coming, where there coming or what numbers they're going to be in and that makes it a very hard event to police and make sure people are kept safe.

Two cars collided on Monkswood Way at about 21:45 BST on Thursday evening during what has been reported as a vehicle cruise event.

Mr Sidhu told PA a small number of cars "went rogue" and left the auto park, where crowds lined the main road to capture footage of the vehicles at speed.

Rix Sidhu said he was "devastated" after the crash, which occurred in Stevenage on Thursday night.

He said the meet was held in support of the 4Louis charity, an organisation which supports those affected by miscarriage, stillbirth and the death of a baby or child.

He added: "We have a liaison officer to pass number plates to police if there is ever any trouble; we try to make it as safe as possible".

One organiser described the crash as "horrific" and a "nightmare".

"I'm thankful that nobody died".

Mr Sidhu said participants are urged to stay within the law, but that drivers are often tempted onto the roads in search of social media attention.

The East of England Ambulance Service said 12 of the injured were taken to three hospitals in Stevenage, Watford, and Harlow.

In July 2015, some 17 people were injured when a Ford Fiesta ploughed into a group of bystanders at a vehicle cruise event in Plymouth, Devon. Two vehicles crashed at a "car cruise" gathering leading to many injuries while onlookers watched on.
