Lufthansa resumes flights to Cairo, BA continues suspension

Britain's Foreign Office has warned travellers of a heightened risk of terrorism against aviation

Adams apologized for not informing Egyptian authorities before British Airways announced it was suspending flights to and from Egypt for a week.

The flag-carrier said the move was a "precaution", on security grounds.

In response, a source in EgyptAir told Al Ahram on Saturday that the national carrier will start using larger aircraft for flights to and from London this week.

According to insiders, no specific threat was detected but airlines are reacting to ongoing concerns about security problems at the Cairo airport.

"The safety of passengers and crew is of the highest priority..." - said in a statement British Airways.

Later on Saturday, Germany's Lufthansa (LHAG.DE) said it had cancelled services from Munich and Frankfurt to Cairo but it resumed flights on Sunday. Flights from the United Kingdom to other Egyptian airports, including services by tour operators to Red Sea coast resorts, have not been affected. Those flights, however, operated without issue on Saturday as Egypt's tourism ministry emphasized no government had called for a stoppage of flights to Egypt.

In its updated travel warning for Egypt, the British Foreign Office referred to British Airways' decision and points to an increased terrorism risk for air traffic.

He added that Egyptian airports provide security measures in accordance with global civil aviation regulations and have undergone many worldwide inspections which have praised their standards. They provided no further details.

A spokeswoman for the Emirates Airline also said the airline's flights were operating as normal. "This is purely based on their risk assessments".

Britain is not the only country expressing new caution about Egypt travel.

Yesterday, British Airways ed passengers who were about to board a plane from Heathrow to the Egyptian capital.

BA is one of only two airlines that fly nonstop between United Kingdom and Cairo.
