The Folding iPhone You’ve Been Waiting for Could Be Here Next Year

Apple Iphone X Apple Watch Airpods

The report comes as Samsung and Huawei are gearing up to release their first foldable smartphones.

For many other smartphone brands, business conditions continue to be hard, with few signs of a silver lining on the horizon.

While popular smartphone makers like Samsung and Huawei are among the first to launch foldable smartphones, it looks like Apple fans might have to wait until 2021 to get their hands on a bendable iPhone or iPad.

Although Apple is showing interest in releasing a foldable iPhone, UBS believes the first foldable device from Apple will actually be an iPad.

Rumours of a foldable iPhone have popped up on numerous occasions over the past few years.

Unlike previous instances where Apple would brick an iPhone that used third-party parts, using a third-party battery or getting a third-party fix vendor to replace your iPhone's battery with one from another iPhone throws up a warning that the battery is not genuine. Even if you were to exchange an official Apple battery from one unit to another, the message will come up unless the exchange was done by someone that Apple approves of; again, that would be an Apple Genius or someone working for an authorized service provider. The images accompanying the patent show a tablet-like device that folds in half like a book. Some customers said they would pay up to US$600 for an upcoming foldable iPhone, yet the cheapest 2018 iPhone model starts at US$749.

China's smartphone shipments booked 97.9 million units in the second quarter this year, down from 104.2 million units a year earlier, according to a report by research firm IDC.

Apple is seemingly going to make its 2020 iPhones 5G compatible, so it is likely to be a bit much to make them foldable at the same time. Anyway, UBS expects 'Samsung will lead the way for foldable adoption as a smartphones vendor'. According to Gizmodo, the company updated its policies earlier this year to include phones with third-party batteries as products eligible for repairs.
