Ebola patients cured with mAb drugs

Four drugs were trialled by an global research group co-ordinated by the World Health Organization on patients in the DR Congo, where there is a major outbreak of the virus.

Scientists however are hopeful that Ebola may soon be a preventable and treatable disease after promising clinical trials of two drugs which, according to expert Dr Sabue Mulangu, saw 60 per cent of the 681 patients survive.

Scientists say the results are very good news for the fight against Ebola as the news marks a first for people who already have been infected.

Both drugs, which were developed using antibodies from Ebola survivors, proved particularly successful in the early days of infection.

The preliminary findings prompted an early halt to a major study on the drugs and a decision to prioritize their use in the African country, where a yearlong outbreak has killed more than 1,800 people.

In contrast, 49% on ZMapp and 53% on Remdesivir died in the study, the agency said.

REGN-EB3, mAb114 and Zmapp are monoclonal antibodies that bind to glycoprotein on the Ebola virus and neutralize its ability to infect other cells.

Two out of the four drugs, REGN-EB3 and mAb114, were effective on the patients.

These ETCs have been overseen by staff from the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale (INRB); the DRC Ministry of Health; and three medical humanitarian organizations: the Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA), the International Medical Corps (IMC), and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

REGN-EB3 and mAb114 "are the first drugs that, in a scientifically sound study, have clearly shown a significant diminution in mortality for people with Ebola virus disease", Anthony Fauci, director of NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said.

"This underscores the importance of doing randomised, controlled trials".

The NIH, Democratic Republic of Congo health authorities and the World Health Organization hailed the "extraordinary team of individuals who have worked under extremely hard conditions to carry out this study", as well as the patients and their families.

The head of WHO, Tedros Adhanom-Ghebreyesus, hailed the results as "welcome news".

"We still see too many people not being found in time for benefiting from these therapies, people residing away from treatment centers", said Mike Ryan, Assistant Director General for Emergencies at WHO. Violence continues to mar the efforts of vaccination providers trying to contain the spread of Ebola, as political unrest, armed conflict, and social upheaval spreads across eastern Congo.

According to the latest data released by a technical committee running the Ebola response and reporting directly to the Congolese president, a total of 2,816 people have reported symptoms of hemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's northeastern provinces of North Kivu and Ituri since ‪Aug.
