Iraq’s FM accuses Western forces of fueling Gulf regional tension

Iraq's foreign minister says Iraq and Gulf Arab states do not need foreign powers to secure navigation in the Persian Gulf as that would only increase regional tensions. He also rejected any Western presence in the strategic waterways, saying that only negotiations can reduce tensions.

The mission will see the Royal Navy working alongside the US Navy to purportedly ensure that the security of merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz amid heightened political tension with Iran.

Although the USA earlier invited a whole array of countries to join its anti-Iran maritime coalition in the Gulf, the proposal was only accepted by Britain, which became part of the mission last week.

Katz said Israel's participation would help to contain the Iranian threat as well as boost ties in the Gulf region.

Katz didn't claim Israel had ships in the Persian Gulf.

The US wants an worldwide coalition to monitor and potentially escort commercial ships there.

IRAN's commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard's navy, Alireza Tangsiri, warned journalists on Sunday that "any illegitimate presence in the waters of the Persian Gulf could spark a war."

It's not clear if Israel has been asked to participate.

Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) has warned against any Israeli presence in the Gulf region, Press TV reported Monday.

"Whenever our commanders wish to, they are able to detain any ship, even if it is accompanied by American and British forces", Tangsiri told Hezollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen television in Lebanon.

"The security of Persian Gulf is among Iran's priorities, and we believe Iran's shipping lanes must remain global", the IRGC general said. The U.S. decision to launch an global coalition to protect shipping came after attacks on oil tankers and the seizure of a British oil tanker by Iran in July. About 20 percent of the world's oil passes through that area.
