PA firefighter loses three children in daycare fire

Paul Laughlin 57 places stuffed animals on Sunday Aug. 11 2019 outside a home at 1248 West 11th St. in Erie Pa. where multiple people died in an early-morning fire

Crotty said that at the time of the fire Jones was responding to another call for what turned out to be a malfunctioning alarm.

Valerie Lockett-Slupski, who was the grandmother of four of the victims, told New York's WNBC that her grandchildren had been going to the daycare for almost a year.

The fifth child who died has not yet been identified publicly. The home also operated as a day care, according to fire officials.

According to Erie Chief Fire Inspector John Widomski, the fire was reported at a single-family residence in Erie, Pennsylvania, at around 1:15 am Sunday (August 11).

Shevona Overton told CBS affiliate WSEE-TV their names were La'Myhia Jones, eight; Luther Jones Jr. six; Ava Jones, four; and Jaydan Augustyniak, nine months.

His children - two daughters, one son - were among those killed.

The Lawrence Park Fire Department is setting up a bank account to raise money for funeral costs for Jones' family, the news website reported.

Two fire inspectors and three Erie police detectives trained in fire investigations were working to determine the cause of the blaze.

The owner of the center was flown to UPMC Mercy for treatment, officials said, and Erie police detectives said the owner was listed in stable condition.

The facility is a 24-hour day care called Harris Family Daycare.

Two teenagers who were also at the daycare managed to escape the fire by jumping off the building's roof.

Flames were said to have been see coming out of the windows of the home and that the fire was so hot that it melted off the front of the home's vinyl siding, as well as portions of the vinyl siding on neighboring homes. Santone added that there was only one smoke detector in the house, which was in the attic.

In a tragic twist, Jones worked for neighboring Lawrence Park Fire Department and was only battling a blaze in Erie because locals crews were desperately trying to rescue his kids at the day care center, the report said.
