Red Bull: Alexander Albon to replace Pierre Gasly

RedBull

Alex Albon will move from Toro Rosso to replace Pierre Gasly at the main Red Bull Formula 1 team from the Belgian Grand Prix onwards.

Red Bull say they will "use the next nine races to evaluate Alex's performance" and make a "decision as to who will drive alongside Max in 2020".

"Everyone at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing looks forward to welcoming Alex to the Team and supporting him during the next phase of his F1 career".

Albon's promotion and Gasly's return to Roro Rosso follows a disappointing first half of the season for the Frenchman marked by his struggles and inability to perform on the same level as teammate Max Verstappen.

Daniil Kvyat had been considered favourite to move up from Toro Rosso had Red Bull chose to drop Gasly either during this year or ahead of next season. In the same press conference, Horner conceded that Gasly's performances had left Red Bull "one-legged" in too many races this year and that it needed its second driver to score more points in order to challenge Ferrari for second place in the constructors' championship.

Gasly has managed just 63 driver points so far in 2019 with no podium finishes compared to Verstappen's five. He has scored 81 points in the last four races alone. And secondly, all bets were on the more experienced Daniil Kvyat from Russian Federation instead of the 23-year-old newcomer with dual nationality.

In a statement on Monday, Red Bull confirmed the two drivers would swap teams.

Thai Albon, 23, has been promoted from the team's sister outfit, Toro Rosso, with Gasly going the other way.

Albon, in his first season of F1 after finishing runner-up in last year's FIA Formula 2 championship, has impressed all in the paddock with his speed and maturity.
