WhatsApp Beta for Android Finally Gets Fingerprint Lock Feature

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has today rolled out a feature where you will be able to unlock WhatsApp on your smartphone by using the fingerprint sensor on your Android device.

Coming to the new feature, WhatsApp Beta users with 2.19.3 update will be able to see a new option called "Authentication" inside the Privacy section of the app. Tapping on Authentication will display a screen where users will have to produce their registered fingerprint on the phone to enable the security feature. Screen lock is available for users on the abovementioned Beta release, and who are using it on Android Marshmallow and above.

WABetainfo WABetainfo also says that Whatsapp is now working on the "Dark mode" feature and will roll it out in the coming three months. Users will need to enable it in Settings, and this feature will allow users to add a layer of protection to their app chats, keeping lurkers at bay. The report also claimed that WhatsApp doesn't have access to user's fingerprint data for validation.

The social messaging app now allows users to choose when they have to authenticate their identity in order to use the app.

There's a 15 minute option on the iOS app, but that hasn't trickled down to the Android version, and hopefully the company will introduce it when the feature is rolled out in the stable version. So you can choose from three options -Immediately, after 1 minute or after 30 minutes.

Once you enable fingerprint unlocking, you'll be able to change the unlock interval.

Users must open WhatsApp Settings and go to Account and then Privacy.

Now that the feature is in open beta, we can expect it to be made available in the stable build of the app soon. WhatsApp features tracker WABetaInfo says that when you enable the Fingerprint Lock feature, the widget content is hidden by default. Right now, the 2.19.3 beta update is rolling out in batches and it's yet to pop up on Google Play Store as well.
