Britain's Johnson loses majority ahead of Brexit Parliament showdown

Members of Boris Johnson's own Conservative party are preparing to join opposition lawmakers and try to force a delay in Britain's exit from the European Union

If lawmakers are granted control of the parliamentary business, they will seek on Wednesday to pass a law that would force Johnson to ask the European Union to delay Brexit for three months until January 31, 2020 unless he has a deal approved by parliament, or parliament agrees to a no-deal Brexit.

Johnson implicitly warned lawmakers on Monday that he would seek an election if they tied his hands in talks to negotiate a last-minute divorce deal, ruling out ever countenancing a further delay to Brexit, originally due to take place last March but now scheduled for October 31.

Mr Johnson needs two thirds of MPs to vote in favour of an election in order to send the United Kingdom to the polls.

But his strategy has been called into question after many in the Labour Part suggested the party's MPs would not back a vote for a general election as it could be scheduled for after the end of October and bring around a no-deal Brexit, which is the legal default.

In a theatrical show of defiance, Conservative MP Phillip Lee crossed the floor of the Commons while Johnson was making his statement, to defect to the pro-European Liberal Democrats.

Lee said that after a great deal of thought he had chose to leave the Conservatives amid concern over its direction since the Brexit vote. The prime minister has threatened to call a general election if he is forced to ask the European Union for an Article 50 extension; but those plans were thrown into doubt after Labour MPs said they would not vote for one. However, The Telegraph reports a source saying that the prime minister announced calling for a snap election on October 14th if Parliament votes against Brexit today.

One of them, former treasury chief Philip Hammond, said he believed that between opposition lawmakers and rebel Conservatives, they have the numbers to vote for a delay to the Brexit deadline.

Mr Baker's comments came after Mr Farage again said he would be willing to form an electoral pact with the Tories - but only if Mr Johnson promised to deliver a "clean break" from the EU.

Pro and anti-Brexit protesters compete for attention outside the Houses of Parliament in central London on September 3, 2019. Not counting the brief slide in the autumn of 2016, in which the currency fell around 6% in a matter of minutes before recovering, the pound is now at its lowest level since 1985.

Members of Johnson's own Conservative party are preparing to join opposition lawmakers to try to force a delay to Britain's exit from the European Union if he can not secure a divorce deal with Brussels in the next few weeks.

They do not have much time, as Johnson has controversially chose to suspend parliament next week for more than a month - a decision that will be challenged in court in Edinburgh on Tuesday. "I don't want an election, the public don't want an election", he added.

"The Prime Minister does not want an election, he wants four weeks of negotiations to get a deal, so if MPs vote for another pointless delay they will have to explain to people what they are doing".
