Body of former Zimbabwean leader Mugabe to leave Singapore on Wednesday

Family members and officials are due to fly out from Singapore with Mugabe’s body on Wednesday

Mugabe, a guerrilla leader who swept to power after Zimbabwe's independence from Britain and went on to rule for 37 years until he was ousted in 2017, died on Friday, aged 95.

This follows reported clashes between President Emmerson Mnangagwa's government and Mugabe's family over where the former President who died in Singapore will be buried.

"To say there is a feud is not correct, it's not true".

Mr Mugabe, 95, a controversial leader who ruled his country for nearly 40 years, will lie in state at two different locations in the capital of Harare.

On arrival in Zimbabwe, Mugabe's body will be taken straight to his village in Kutama, in Zvimba district west of the capital Harare, for an overnight wake.

He also stated that the scheduled burial of the former president had also been postponed.

Speaking to reporters outside the building, he added that Mr Mugabe's body will be carried home by a chartered flight on Wednesday morning. First is where the former president is going to be buried, there's still no agreement on that. However, respected Human Rights lawyer Dr Pedzisai Ruhanya said it is in the best interest for the Mugabe family to be in good books with Zanu-PF and especially Mnangagwa.

But in a memo sent to embassies in Harare on Sunday, it encouraged foreign heads of state to leave immediately after the funeral service wraps up on Saturday.

A senior ZANU-PF politburo member, who requested anonymity to speak freely, said there were lessons to be learned.

"Probably President Mnangagwa should have persuaded and cajoled comrade Mugabe's family more to avoid this dispute spilling into the public and embarrassing him and the party", the politburo member said.
