Brexit: Labour deputy Tom Watson calls for referendum ahead of election

Watson, Thornberry and Starmer will be devastated, because they fear it will see large number of remain supporting Labour voters switching to support the Lib Dems and the Greens in the looming election.

He will also argue that if a referendum were to follow an election, then Labour should commit "unambiguously and unequivocally" to campaign for Remain.

Mr Johnson has spoken for over an hour inside Downing Street with DUP leader Arlene Foster and her party's Westminster head Nigel Dodds, who said it was a "very good meeting as always".

Speaking at Somerset House in central London, Mr Watson will say: 'The only way to break the Brexit deadlock once and for all is a public vote in a referendum.

Corbyn later met leaders of the key Labour-affiliated unions, and agreed the party should stick to its policy of backing a referendum, but ensuring they have something to offer leave supporters.

Mr Corbyn recommitted to a second referendum on Brexit, which he said would include a "credible option to Leave" as well as Remain.

LABOUR - Labour's official line is to support a second referendum in preference to a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Corbyn instructed union members: 'No-one can belief the phrase of a Prime Minister who's threatening to interrupt the legislation to power via no-deal.

"And I can tell you this: We're ready for that election".

In an address to union members in Brighton he pledged to "unleash the biggest people-powered campaign we've ever seen".

Mr Mann, who is set to take up a full-time post as the Government's anti-Semitism tsar, said: "Every Labour MP, every Labour activist in the North and the Midlands, knocking on doors listening to the voters, is hearing what is going on".

"Only Boris Johnson and the Conservatives will deliver Brexit by 31 October, no ifs or buts, so we can move on and focus on the issues that matter to people - investing in the NHS, reducing violent crime and cutting the cost of living".

He also accused the PM of cosying up to US President Donald Trump to get a "one-sided" trade deal with the US which would damage employment rights, the NHS and United Kingdom industry.

And it will probably delight Boris Johnson, who would expect to campaign against opposition parties with significantly differing degrees of commitment to reversing the result of the 2016 referendum.

The PM had already kicked off his unofficial election campaign with a visit to Yorkshire on Thursday, during which he re-announced his police recruitment drive.

"My experience on the doorstep tells me most of those who've deserted us over our Brexit policy did so with deep regret and would greatly prefer to come back; they just want us to take an unequivocal position that whatever happens we'll fight to remain, and to sound like we mean it", he will say.

"We will put power in the hands of workers".

A law drafted by Opposition figures demanding the Brexit deadline is extended to January 2020 to avoid Britain leaving the European Union without a deal is expected to receive Royal Assent this week.
