Hong Kong protesters urge US President to liberate the territory from China

Central Hong Kong Beset With Violence After Lam's Big Concession

On Sunday, thousands of people gathered outside the U.S. Consulate in Hong Kong to call on Washington to pass human rights legislation that would require a review of the city's separate trading status in the event of human rights violations.

Activists started fires in the street and vandalised a Mass Transit Railway (MTR) station in the main business district of Central on Sunday after thousands rallied peacefully at the USA consulate, calling for help in bringing democracy to the special administrative region. The rally called for US lawmakers to pass the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, which would require the Secretary of State to certify annually that the city is sufficiently autonomous from mainland China to justify the special treatment now afforded to it.

"We need worldwide help to protect our human rights and stand up against the government for violating those rights in Hong Kong", he added.

"Many Hong Kong people think that it is kind of worldwide help that is very important because it help Hong Kong government be held accountable to the global community and the Chinese government too", Johns Hopkins professor Ho-Fung Hung said in an interview on Matt Lewis and the News on FTR Radio this past week.

The government said it was very much in Hong Kong's own interest to maintain our autonomy to safeguard our interests and advantages under the "one country, two systems" principle after the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997. "Are you insane?" was hung from the overpass, and protesters repeatedly chanted slogans such as "USA", and "Fight for freedom, stand with Hong Kong". "Currently, the views of U.S. politicians and Hong Kong protesters may broadly align, but we can not assume that will always be the case". Beijing and the entirely state-controlled media have portrayed the protests as an effort by criminals to split the territory from China, backed by what it said were hostile foreigners.

At the Mong Kok police station, clashes took place for a third straight night.

Hong Kong's government promised this past week to formally withdraw the bill, but that failed to appease the demonstrators, who have widened their demands to include calls for direct elections for the city's leaders and an independent probe into alleged police brutality against protesters. Protesters suspect that policemen in China are now infiltrated among the Hong Kong law enforcement agencies. She urged an end to police violence against protesters and said Congress looks forward to "swiftly advancing" the Hong Kong bill. Police fired projectiles at an angry crowd that was shining laser beams, and several people were detained. But the president has suggested that it's a matter for China to handle, though he also has said that no violence should be used.

Wong said he believes he would be freed on Monday.

Pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong was released from police custody after breaching bail conditions following his arrest in August when he was charged along with a number of other prominent activists for inciting and participating in an unauthorised assembly. "The Carrie Lam concession, so-called concession has come too little, too late".

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the United States was monitoring events.
