September Democratic debate: Everything you need to know

US senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren are the two main progressives in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020

One intriguing aspect is that the two front runners, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren, will be on the same debate stage for the first time.

In late August, a Monmouth University poll put progressives Warren and Sanders ahead with 20 per cent each and Biden tailing with 19 per cent. Since more than 10 have already qualified, it looks like this will be a two-night debate again.

"World News Tonight" anchor David Muir will moderate the third Democratic debate alongside ABC News colleagues George Stephanopoulos, Linsey Davis and Univision's Jorge Ramos. Kamala Harris; entrepreneur Andrew Yang; former Texas Rep. Beto O'Rourke; and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julián Castro.

After praising Warren's ideological commitments and her efforts to increase consumer protections in the financial sector, Rendell takes his fellow Democrat to task for "trying to have it both ways" by claiming independence from high-dollar donors while surreptitiously relying on them. The candidates with the highest polling averages - Biden and Warren - will be center stage.

"But to gain traction in the polls, and to generate the impression of viability that interests potential donors, most candidates need the media to give their campaigns enough news coverage so that they don't appear to be a lost cause", Noyes wrote. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii and Tim Ryan of Ohio, Colorado Sen.

Candidates will make opening statements, but there will be no closing remarks, the network says.

As noted above, this is the first time that all the top candidates will share a debate stage on the same night so the potential for fireworks is prominent.

Candidates will be given one minute and 15 seconds to answer questions and 45 seconds for responses and rebuttals. Univision News will also livestream the debate on its digital platforms, including Facebook, YouTube and Periscope. NBCNews.com will live-blog throughout the night, offering live updates, fact checks and analysis.

To qualify for Thursday's debate, candidates had to amass 130,000 unique donors, double the amount needed to qualify for the debates earlier this summer.

This isn't a do-or-die debate for any participant; in fact, everyone who qualified is guaranteed an invitation to return for the next Democratic debate in mid-October.
