Trump on 9/11 vows to hit Taliban 'harder'

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a 911 memorial ceremony at the Pentagon to commemorate the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks

Earlier Wednesday morning, at 6:46 a.m., an American Flag was unfurled down the side of the Pentagon. Vice President Mike Pence delivered remarks at a commemorative service in Shanksville. Like Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, Trump marked the day with the war still raging.

The anniversary ceremonies remember the almost 3,000 people who were killed when hijacked planes struck the trade center in NY, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. The ceremony will include reading the names of all those who were killed.

Now about 14,000 US troops remain and Trump has called it "ridiculous" that they are still in Afghanistan after so long and so many billions of dollars spent. "And that will continue", Trump said referring to the assault that was ordered after he cancelled the peace talks with the Taliban last week in retaliation for a suicide auto bomb attack that killed one American soldier in Kabul.

A large explosion went off in the vicinity of the US Embassy in Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan, moments after midnight on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, footage from the scene shows.

The number of USA troops peaked at around 100,000 but began to drop steadily after Bin Laden was killed in 2011.

The US invasion of Afghanistan began in November 2001 with the aim of defeating al-Qaeda and hunting down 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden, whom the US accused the Taliban of hiding.

In addition to those killed on 11 September, thousands of first responders, construction workers and residents have since developed an illness, many of them terminal, as a result of inhaling toxic fumes that engulfed lower Manhattan.

Pompeo said the United States won't release the pressure until the Taliban is serious about peace.

Majorities of Americans, including veterans, think the war in Afghanistan was not worth fighting, according to a May poll from Pew Research Center.

But the fighting has only intensified, and it's now likely to escalate significantly more.

That claim was backed up by sources CBS News contacted at Resolute Support, the US -led North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission in Afghanistan.

Mr Trump has said he wants to withdraw around 5,000 of the 14,000 United States military personnel still in the country. Elizabeth Warren have said they would ensure American combat forces return from Afghanistan during their first term, while California Sen. Bernie Sanders have lauded that timeframe but stopped short of full commitment to it.
