GM recalling 3.5 million U.S. vehicles due to braking issue

GM recalls more than 3.4M pickups, SUVs to fix brake issues

General Motors has issued a recall of 3.4 million pickup trucks and SUVs in the U.S. in order to fix a problem with brakes in the vehicles.

The recall involves some of GM's best-selling products: the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks, and the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban, and Cadillac Escalade SUVs.

Dealers will recalibrate the electronic brake control module.

Owners began receiving notifications of the recall on September 6.

The recall comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began investigating in November of previous year.

The NHTSA opened a preliminary investigation into the issue last November, and said it had reports of nine related crashes and two injuries. The vacuum assist pump is lubricated with engine oil that flows into the pump through a filter screen, but GM said the design may cause the system to lose effectiveness over time due to debris such as oil sludge accumulating on the filter screen. The move, according to Reuters, is to address a vacuum pump issue that may potentially make braking more hard, and the problem has been linked to 113 accidents and 13 injuries.

GM isn't replacing the pumps because pump failures are rare and already are covered by an extended warranty, Flores said.

The automaker says the fix will improve brake performance in any instance where vacuum power drops and noted most of the reported incidents involved motorists driving at low speeds.

The agency has been investigating the problem for 10 months. A message will also populate on the dashboard telling the driver to service the brake system. Reuters reports that GM is also recalling 270,000 other vehicles in the US, including 177,000 2018 Chevrolet Malibu cars with 1.5L turbo engines because an engine error can disable the fuel injectors and 91,000 2019 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vehicles due to a seatbelt-unfastened warning-light issue. 5-litre turbocharged engines. GM says in documents posted Wednesday on the NHTSA website that a software error can corrupt data used by the engine control computer.
