Google Maps shows sunken auto where missing man’s body was found

William Earl Moldt's remains were found via Google Earth satellite images of a Florida pond

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office investigators said Wednesday that the skeletal remains of William Moldt were found in a vehicle submerged in a retention pond in the Grand Isles at Wellington community. One week later the remains were positively identified as belonging to Mr Moldt.

According to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, more than 600,000 people go missing in the USA every year, with at least 4,400 unidentified bodies recovered each year.

The skeletal remains on the 40-year-old were found in a submerged vehicle last month in a pond in Wellington near Palm Beach.

In August, a resident said he suspected there was a submerged vehicle in a retention pond behind his property, according to deputies.

After being called out to the scene, cops determined the auto had likely been there for a long time due to the condition it was in.

According to an update posted to The Charley Project, an online repository of missing-persons cases, Moldt's sunken vehicle had been plainly visible on Google Earth since 2007.

An image of the submerged auto is still available to view on Google Earth.

A previous resident of the neighbourhood of Grand Isles in Wellington, Florida, about 30 kilometres west of Lantana, was looking at the area on Google Earth when he zoomed into a pond and saw what looked like a auto.

The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System says Moldt went to a nightclub in November 1997 but didn't appear intoxicated when he left alone.

A property surveyor looking at Google Earth spotted the auto on August 28 this year.

Grand Isles was under construction in 1997 when Mold disappeared, WPLG Local 10 reported.

Although he was not a frequent drinker, on that particular evening he had several drinks at the bar.

Moldt had called his girlfriend at the time to tell her he was on his way home from the club but he never made it back, Newsweek reported.
