JUST IN | Mugabe to be buried in national monument

Grace Mugabe sits at funeral wake of her

The family of former Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe have agreed to bury him at a monument for national heroes in Harare, a family spokesman said on Friday though the date for the ceremony was still unclear.

Leo Mugabe said later there was no feud, claiming the burial would be private.

"The family and traditional leaders have pronounced that he will be buried at the National Heroes Acre", said Mr Mugabe.

Mugabe's widow, Grace, reportedly agreed to a Heroes Acre burial for as long as the former president is buried in a mausoleum - breaking with tradition at the monument where all graves are typically separated by just over a meter with a simple granite tombstone.

"The family and the tradional leaders have pronounced that he will be buried at the National Heroes Acre...as to when he will be buried there are things that the chiefs want done at the national heroes acre and those will take time.

That's the decision of the whole family", his nephew Leo Mugabe said.

Former President Robert Mugabe's family asked his wife to rest and not be beside his body as it lies in state for a second day.

Heads of state expected to attend the funeral include China's President Xi Jinping, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Kenya's Uhuru Kenyatta.

Some relatives are still bitter over Mugabe's ouster and the role played by Mnangagwa, a long-time ally who turned against him.

The event is expected will be be graced by region and global guests who will make up the VVIP tent that include visiting Heads of State, former Heads of State, Heads of Delegation, Vice Presidents and their spouses, AU Representatives and SADC Representatives. But the family said traditional chiefs in his homestead in the Zvimba region should decide.

He remained free in Zimbabwe with his family after he was forced from office.

Zimbabweans still struggle to survive, with a once-vaunted public health system now a shambles and the economy still in crisis.

His government's fuel price hike this year sparked protests which led to a crackdown on opposition and clashes in which soldiers opened fire killing 17 people.
