The UW is also fourth among USA public institutions - behind UCLA, UC Berkeley and the University of MI - a position it has held for the last four years.

Swinburne has ranked in the top 400 of the world's best universities in the 2020 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

However, both the IITs individually did fairly well by ascending to higher ranks on the chart and succeeding IIT Mumbai and Delhi.

The six Indian universities that featured in the top 500 list includes Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Indore and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur.

Swinburne improved in many areas in the 2020 rankings including citations, research income, publications and research reputation.

US-based universities made up the majority of the top ten with Stanford, MIT, Princeton, Harvard, Yale and the University of Chicago ranking ahead of Imperial College London in tenth.

The THE World University Rankings, published once a year, assess nearly 1 400 institutions worldwide.

In the top 20, most schools are located in either the USA or the UK. "It is fabulous to see UNBC increase its score in every category Times Higher Education uses to measure elite global universities". According to THE, the best Indian institutions are generally characterised by relatively strong scores for teaching environment and industry income, but perform poorly when it comes to worldwide outlook in comparison to both regional and global counterparts. The Indian government has strong ambitions to boost the global standing of its top universities and attract foreign students, academics and research collaboration.

Globally, the U.S. once again has 60 universities in the top 200, 10 of which comes from the state of California alone. Because they attempt to compare universities that exist in a range of contexts - cultural, financial, historical, social and political - rankings are inherently imperfect, particularly when it comes to developing countries.
