Video Surfaces of New SNL Cast Member Shane Gillis Making Racist Jokes

'Saturday Night Live' Adds 3 New Cast Members, Including First Asian Star Bowen Yang

Saturday Night Live is adding three new faces for season 45 - including the show's first ever Asian-American cast member. She joins a long line of Jewish comedians on the famed sketch show - Gilda Radner, Andy Samberg, Adam Sandler and Sarah Silverman, to name a few. Previous cast members Fred Armisen and Rob Schneider are both part Asian.

The video was initially reported by Variety after freelance writer Seth Simons brought it to their attention. They did not specify which city they were referring to. Later in the conversation, apparently recorded in 2018, Gillis says their talk was "nice racism, good racism". One of his most popular clips on YouTube is this joke he performed for Comedy Central explaining precisely why white people like country music. As of Thursday evening, the audio from the podcast was also still available.

Officials from Saturday Night Live did not immediately respond to requests for comment about the hiring of Gillis.

Vulture's Megh Wright reported that Gillis had a history of making similar videos, talking to those in the Philadelphia comedy scene and pointing out an active subreddit dedicated to his podcast. He has appeared in HBO's "High Maintenance" and in this year's romantic comedy "Isn't It Romantic?".

Chloe Fineman, Shane Gillis and Bowen Yang join this season according to an NBC press release, and a tweet from the show's official account. Yang is co-host of a podcast, Las Culturistas.
